ECHO Cottages Ltd began and continues as a local family run business to provide a compassionate and affordable alternative to assisted living facilities or nursing homes in the Hudson Valley and beyond.
But how did we get started building ECHO Cottages?
As with many great things, our story begins with a spectacular crash.
My father Bill at 78 years old decided he wanted to learn how to fly helicopters. The men in my family all think we are naturals at something, we just haven’t discovered it yet. So, he bought a small single seat helicopter and took a grand total of 4.5 hours in lessons before embarking on his first solo flight.
He found out, much to his dismay, that he was not in fact a natural at flying a helicopter. Luckily, he was so bad, he didn’t even make it to full altitude. This saved his life when he promptly crashed, recking his helicopter and banging himself up badly.
After getting treated by a “doctor in a box” on the side of the road, he drove home 5 hours and sat in his recliner refusing care. “I know my body better than anybody else!” he proclaimed repeatedly.
After 5 days, my mother finally dragged him to the hospital where they proceeded to put a tube down his throat and put him in intensive care because he had actually broken 8 ribs, had double pneumonia, and his kidneys had shut down. He was circling the drain.
The doctor told him he had to go to a nursing home with physical therapy and rehabilitation. Over his dead body! “At 78, I’ll never get out alive!” he said.
Fortunately, my mother is still around, and he was able to return home under her care along with that of a private duty nurse. Over the next few months, rehabbing from his recliner, he developed the concept of ECHO Cottages.
He called me up (I have been building custom homes since 1973) and pitched the idea to me. ECHO Cottages was born to help keep people out of nursing homes and close to their family but still with their own private living space.
Or as my father loved to say “Close, but not too close.”
ECHO Cottages has been building custom, temporary modular homes for the elderly ever since.
If you can relate to our story (first of all heaven help you!) and you and/or your aging parent chafes at the commonly available elder care options, please contact us so we can help you determine if an ECHO Cottage is right for your family.
